The potential for genetic testing to be used to diagnose diseases such as cystic fibrosis, arthritis and coeliac disease was the focus of a Channel 7 news segment this week. University of Queensland Diamantina Institute Director Professor Matt Brown said advances in genetic testing technology meant the cost of testing would soon be affordable for the general public.

Testing would allow medical practitioners to offer proactive treatment before diseases became obvious in patients.
Professor Brown told Channel 7 there was a need for protective legislation related to employment and insurance to enable people to have genetic tests.
